New Hikes Near Portland

William L. Sullivan gets around! How else would you explain the fact that the author of 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington updates this book every few years by re-hiking many of its listed trails, while also hosting 30 slide shows a year? Tonight he introduces newly discovered paths like a "historic railroad grade near the Dalles," along with lodging tips. Check out his user-friendly website (oregonhiking.com), which includes 270 of his favorite local hot spots. Tualatin REI, 7410 SW Bridgeport Road, Tualatin, 7 pm, rei.com. Free. Easy.

Fri.-Sat. April 20-22

Le Tour De Survival

Suddenly, you're lost deep in the 'burbs with only a bike, a growling stomach and Keanu's voice muttering, "What do you do? What do you do?" It could happen, right? If it ever does, you'll regret skipping this three-day bike tour with Shaun Deller. Aside from making stylish recycled hats (shaundeller.com), apparently he's also something of a survivalist (dellerdesigns.blogspot.com). This weekend, he'll teach you the ways of edible and medicinal wild-food foraging, Flintstones-style fire making, shelter building, tracking, stalking and animal awareness. Register at trackersnw.com. Noon. $85-$95. Easy-Moderate.

The Earth Day Celebration

Having totally dug the chill community vibe of last year's ode to sustainability in Sellwood Park still doesn't fully explain why I'm so stoked for the one this year. The new Northeast setting is no doubt a welcome change, but I'm just as elated knowing the three solar-powered stages are returning along with many of the 150 organizations (Go SHIFT!). I'm most excited for two things: The new group rides (16!), scheduled all over Portland, and watching the Sprockettes wheel-'n'-deal on the b-ball court. Woodlawn Park. 10 am-10 pm. For times and locations of the group rides, visit cityrepair.org. Free. Easy.

Play In the Woods Expo

For nature lovers lookin' to celebrate Earth Day in St. Elsewhere, this 30-mile diversion from PDX ain't a bad Plan B, if for no other reason than its extensive list of planned activities. Diversions include orienteering, birding, disc golf, trekking pole and kayaking demonstrations, and workshops on geocaching (like a GPS scavenger hunt), outdoors safety, "leave no trace" ethics and map/compass navigation. Champoeg State Heritage Area, St. Paul. 10 am-4 pm. For directions, visit croc.org. Free ($3 parking fee). Easy.
