| GET YOUR SWERVE ON at the Human Power Challenge, Saturday. IMAGE: ohpv.org |
Thursday May 24
Six Summits Project
The Oregon Coast is very bike-friendly. At least according to Erden Eruc's most recent blog dispatches (around-n-over.org), which describe his latest Seattle-to-San Francisco pedal—a mere joy ride when compared with his ultimate human-powered goal of circumnavigating the globe. He's also vowed to climb the highest peaks on each continent. Check out his slide show. Refreshments served. The North Face, 1202 NW Davis St., 727-0200. 8 pm. Free. Easy.
Closer to Land Luncheon
Three Rivers Land Conservancy is providing lunch to anyone interested in hearing about their current endeavors, like the West Willamette Restoration Project (land restoration and ivy removal in the West Hills). Yum. World Forestry Center, Cheatham Hall, 4033 SW Canyon Road., 699-9825 (call to register). Free, donations welcomed. Easy.
Sat.-Mon. May 26-28
Human Power Challenge
Stocks, multi-riders, super-stocks, super-streets and streamliners return to Portland International Raceway. Upscale recumbent bikes—hell, yes! In a town where tall-bike and mini-bike sightings are commonplace, it's no wonder these races garner such healthy crowds (spectating's free). Now go get your swerve on. Portland International Raceway, 1940 N Victory Blvd., ohpv.org. 8 am. $40-$45 to participate. Easy-Difficult.
Monday May 28
Up the Lazy River
Gross exaggeration of age will be quickly spotted by fellow runners/walkers at this 20-year-old Oregon Road Runners Club 10K race—all participants will wear their ages on their backs. As if you weren't self-conscious enough about people staring at your backside. Mary S. Young Park, 19980 Willamette Drive, West Linn, orrc.net. 8:30 am. $10-$40. Easy-Difficult.
Tuesday May 29
Pedal Potluck Picnic
Last summer I attended my first triple-P ride, and my only regret was having no time to concoct a veggie dish of my own to share. Fortunately, the group made a convenient pit stop at Freddie's, temporarily relieving freeloader guilt (though my offerings of Veggie Booty and juice were poor substitutes for fine home cookin'). Thank creator Shawn Granton for a third series of second chances. Eight rides (3-5 miles apiece) are scheduled this summer—each with its own mystery picnic destination. First ride leaves from Food Front Grocery, 2375 NW Thurman St., shift2bikes.org. 6:30 pm. Free. Easy.
