Art that is functional is often dismissed as craft or design. This is unfortunate, if unavoidable. Lâm Quang has been making beautiful illuminated paper sculptures for the better part of 15 years. His sculptures also function as table lamps, standing lamps and sconces. Are they fixtures? Yes. Are they art? You betcha—and may anyone who would maintain otherwise be infested with the fleas of a thousand camels. This month Quang and fellow artist Kestrel Gates are celebrating nearly 10 years of business for Quang's HiiH Gallery with a one-night show and sale. Quang is well known and well thought of in the community, particularly to habitués of the Alberta Arts District, but he is not one for shameless self-promotion and, for all his ubiquity, flies largely under the radar.
