Paul Dahlquist's Vibrant Energy

NEWS & HANGINGS

Photographs by prolific Portland photographer Paul Dahlquist highlight a new coffee-table book called Vibrant Energy: Black Men Revealed. The book, published by Tree of Life Press, includes black-and-white nudes by 18 other photographers as well. Despite a cringe-worthy introduction by Larry Cross and cheesy chapter titles like "Edgy," "Fantasy" and "Regular Folks," the book offers some beautifully lit and well-composed images, scattered among more pedestrian fare. With plenty of oversized erections, masturbation, cum shots and male-on-male fellatio, it seems intended for a gay or gay-friendly readership, but the larger question of its modus operandi is trickier. Cross says Vibrant Energy is "an affirmation and celebration of the black man." But it is also unquestionably a fetishization, and given the historical stereotyping of black male virility, the subject matter cannot escape the gravity of its sociopolitical implications. Just how loaded those implications are is left to us to decide. To order, email treeoflifepress@yahoo.com. $59.95.
