[October 17th, 2007] 4741 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 233-1286. Dinner Tuesday-Saturday. $$ Moderate.

Don’t misunderstand Apizza Scholls. Yes, this always-packed pizza “parlor” has attitude that’s a skosh on the hoity-toity, “Soup Nazi” side, what with its hard and fast “no takeout” and “no dough, no dice” policies. One can expect this kind of snottiness from a Manhattan institution like Lombardi’s, but not from a Portland joint serving “gourmet” pizza on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard east of 39th Avenue. But let’s relax: The pizza is actually that good . Apizza Scholls’ use of simple, fresh ingredients—as in, fresh dough made daily, extra-virgin olive oil and generous use of sea salt—and stringent attention to oven temperature make for one magical pie. Even the presentation is thoughtful: Pizzas are served on a traditional pizza stand so as not to cramp anyone’s dining style. If attention to details and a splash of truffle oil make Apizza Scholls’ $20 pies “gourmet,” then so be it. It’s damn good pizza. (LS)

Signature Dish: Apizza’s ’Margo’rita is a spin on the classic Margherita pizza, but with more cheese: fresh whole-milk mozzarella, pecorino and Grana Padano.

Standouts: We recommend the New York White pie. It’s a walk on the wild side—we’re talking five different cheeses with no red sauce—but oh, so tasty.

Regrets: The large, new dining room is connected to the old through what seems to be the kitchen.

are you high? new? am i the only one that noticed apizza scholls has been around long enough to not be considered NEW...but i noticed Merriwethers was "new" to you as well and they have been around for quite some time. Malay Satay Hut was there when i moved to portland. I can't wait to read a review on that new hot spot Jake's Grill, I heard they just opened too.

The "new" mark only means that it is the first year Apizza Scholls has appeared in our Restaurant Guide. We've written about the restaurant before, but we hadn't included it in "our 100 favorite restaurants." Same goes for Meriwether's.

Ian Gillingham  writes on Nov 2nd, 2007 8:49am

But we did say in the intro that the NEW symbol "indicated the places that have opened since our last guide," forgetting to mention places that were just new to the '07 Guide.

I think we were high. Anybody else up for some pizza?

There is an sj in every city, and on every street ...

Sad but true, sj .... Looking lame has never seemed so refreshingly new ...

New or not... Apizza Scholls rocks. Except of course the long wait during dinner time. That didn't rock so much.

This place is the pits. There pizza is burnt. Always. Ask them not to burn it and it will still be burnt. I do not mean a little charring. I mean burnt, also if it the weekend and you do not want to wait two hour to be disappointed, show up at 4:00 and start the line. If you are back by the bakery it will take about an hour and a half before you are seated. Never again!
