Cheap Eats

100 percent of your daily value for affordable eating.

BY BEN WATERHOUSE | 503-243-2122

[March 19th, 2008]

You gotta eat. While you’re at it, you might as well eat well. And when times are tight and your wallet starts to feel a bit light, you’d better eat cheap.

So this year, just like every year, we’ve collected reviews of more than 140 of our favorite places to get our daily 2,000 calories and carefully proportioned servings of the five essential food groups: meat, grains, veggies, coffee and fat. You’ll find a lot of old favorites, along with a couple dozen new ones.

We’ve shaken up the order a bit. Instead of the usual alphabetical listings, restaurants are organized by cuisine. We hope this will make the guide easier to use, but if you liked the old way better, don’t worry—we’ve included an index that lists the restaurants by name and another by neighborhood.

For the cheapest of cheap eaters, local food blogger Cuisine Bonne Femme has ravenously sought out the best carts to get chi-chi chow for chintzy prices. For nights when you’d rather eat in, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite bakeries, delis and greengrocers. Kelly Clarke tried the most fab and fatty fast food in town, and Hanna Neuschwander writes up the city’s finest coffee houses. Finally, Saundra Sorenson seeks out the favorite cheap eats of a few of Portland’s myriad subcultures.

Don’t see your favorite restaurant here? There are a few reasons why it might be missing:

1 . It may not be cheap enough. To be “cheap,” a restaurant must offer breakfast and lunch for under $10 and a dinner for under $15.

2. We may have promoted it to Restaurant Guide, our annual compendium of our favorite 100 restaurants, printed every October. That’s where you’ll find Pok Pok, Podnah’s Pit and Apizza Scholls.

3. We may have no idea it exists! Please feel free to email your suggestions for next year’s guide to bwaterhouse@wweek.com.

Happy eating,
Ben Waterhouse

Brian and Luisa: You can stop by the WW office at 2220 NW Quimby St. for a free copy of Cheap Eats for the next week or two. After that it'll be archived.

What happened to Binh Minh? They have the best vietnamese sandwiches in town, hands down and it's super cheap and quick!

Dinae  writes on Apr 4th, 2008 4:29pm

The Red and Black got written up under "coffee" but has a full kitchen these days, with a totally vegan menu, the most expensive item being a green goddess salad at a whopping $7.25 We'd probably be better placed in the vegetarian section.

Will there ever be a cheap eats guide that explores the other side of the river? Theres many places here in the 'burbs that are pretty tasty and cheap! Like the amazing Spicy Pickle Deli on the corner of Scholls Ferry and Nimbus...Mini pizzas, Sandwiches and salads, all with fillings and toppings that are a step above the usual sandwich fare you find in Tigard (Subway, Quiznos).

I missed the "cheap eats" issue.

Kicking myself.

Today is April 17.

Where can I get an issue?

Thank you so much

I also missed the cheap eats this year and just now realized it... any way to get ahold of one now? thanks!

Patty  writes on Sep 26th, 2008 9:10am

Mi Famiglia Wood Oven Pizzeria in Oregon City if more than worthy!

Jesse  writes on Jan 12th, 2009 2:37pm

You know what would make the list incredibly useful, A G-map with pins at each restaurant. Then you could find somewhere nearby without researching the location of everything on the list. Expanding; maps based on cuisine would also be nice.

PDX Visitor  writes on Feb 16th, 2009 4:28pm

Where's the Cheap Eats index? Where's the list-by-cuisine? Where's the list-by-neighborhood?

This online version is very close to unusable.

Ben Waterhouse  writes on Feb 16th, 2009 4:52pm

They're all cheap. It's Cheap Eats. The rest, yes, is not online.
