Ken’s Artisan Bakery

BY WW EDITORIAL STAFF | 503-243-2122

[March 19th, 2008] If the high ceilings and rustic decor at this affordable boulangerie don’t draw you in, then the startlingly attractive employees certainly will. For lunch, try Ken’s Hero ($6.45), a delicious combination of Italian deli meats, pickled onions, iceberg and a drop of cherry-shallot vinaigrette. Finish it off with a canelé ($1.95), a French pastry baked in beeswax with a thick, caramelized crust and a custard center. Of course, the bread is the real show-stealer: The Country Brown Boule ($8) stands out as a lesson on the life-changing qualities of a good loaf. (JKM)

338 NW 21st Ave., 248-2202. Breakfast, lunch and early dinner daily.
