Portland Fruit Tree Project

Have a tree dripping with fruit that goes to waste or slimes the sidewalk? This delicious organization will hook you up with volunteers to pick that fruit, to be shared among the owner, volunteers and the hungry. Eight harvesting parties in 2007, including a band of jolly fifth-graders, picked plums, pears, apples, figs and persimmons. The all-volunteer group, which hopes to become a nonprofit, also offers classes on canning in the summer and pruning in the winter. 284-6106, portlandfruit.org. (SS)
