Barack Obama

When candidates come in for endorsement interviews, we always wince when they tell us we’re at a crossroads, or a watershed moment. Electoral clichés all, and ones that make us doubt those who uttered them.

Well, sorry, but this presidential election is a watershed moment, one that gives us an opportunity to unwind one of the most tragic eight-year stretches in this nation’s history. That painful reversal doesn’t end with the election of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. But it sure as hell begins there.

We’re backing Obama for all the reasons we did in our primary endorsement: He is one of the most skilled politicians in a generation. And the way he’s run his campaign speaks to a competence and professionalism that represent the best chance to repair the devastation left by the Bush years.

As the nation approaches Year 6 of the Iraq war, we need a president who has the judgment to extricate us from this tragedy and repair our foreign policy.

As we sink into economic collapse, we need a president with the wisdom to know that the fundamentals of the economy are not sound—and with the skill to fix them. Obama shows every sign of being that leader.

As for John McCain, what five-plus years in a POW camp couldn’t do—make McCain forfeit his honor—the hunger to be president has.

Any lingering illusion that McCain is a man of integrity has been shattered. He has flip-flopped positions regularly, and his bad judgment has never been more evident than his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

We disagree with McCain about a lot. He’s wrong about the path to energy independence. He’s wrong about taxes. He’s been wrong about the war. But his choice of someone with such strange notions and staggering inexperience as Palin is the clearest signal that he is simply unfit for the presidency.

McCain has said the measure of a politician is his willingness to run an honest campaign. Yet McCain’s distortion of Obama’s record and smearing of his character have been a pathetic capstone to a long career in public service.

As for the rest of the third-party flotsam—Ralph Nader, Bob Barr, Cynthia McKinney—sorry, folks, this is no time to gamble.

It’s likely you’ve already made up your mind before you read this. So here’s our request—it’s not enough that you vote for Obama. Persuade one other person who may be on the fence. Maybe it’s your grandmother in Ohio still struggling with the notion of electing a black man as president. Maybe it’s your veteran uncle in Florida, who believes McCain’s war-hero status has earned him the right to be president. Remind them what we’ve been through and how McCain has largely marched in lockstep for the past eight years.

This is, as much as we are loath to say it, a watershed moment.

Wow...all of your Federal selections are Democrats!! I am shocked!!! Not just Democrats, these are leftist Democrats!

All of your choices?? Every one?? Where is the diversity? Where are the differences that make us stronger as a whole?

Barak a skilled politician? I thought we wanted change!?! Get rid of the "Politicians", and get some of "us" in office!!! What up with this snake-oil salesman. Can't we Democrats do better than a "Skilled Politician"??

OMG!!!

You guys suck. I supported MFNW in part because of you, but your political bias is crap. What makes you so qualified to select the next leadership of this country? I don't recall asking you.

I don't need your help to decide that BO is as full of crap as the rag you guys publish. The cover of your latest edition is offensive. This may be Blue Portland and Blue Oregon, so you're just falling in line, but to fall in line with a complete vacuum like Obama is brain dead on your part.

We are approaching year 7 of the Iraq war - 2009 is the 6th anniversary. We are in the 8th year of the war in Afghanistan.

"What makes you so qualified to select the next leadership of this country?"

Uh, David...hate to break it to you, but in America, every citizen over 18 is qualified to select the leadership of the country.

Hey, Fork You! I don't need to be no citizen to vote!

Not one stinking word is raised in this editorial over Obama's absolutely filthy, disgusting, thieving campaign against Hillary Clinton. No, we can't dare offend people for fear of being tagged "racist" or some stupid thing.

Obama, even more than McCain, is totally unfit and unqualified for president. The best action this paper could have taken would be no endorsement at all.

We have been handed a miserable selection. I intend to sit the presidential election out.

Susan - don't be so emotional - none of our votes matter - the fix went in for Obomber when the Neocons let their Nietzchien craving for endless war get the best of them; i.e. they failed Machiavelli 101: Don't fight those you wish to destroy, set them to fighting one another.

That's when the Global Oligarchy called in the A Team: Brzezinski et al, for whom the Middle East is a small-time side show; his goal, to set China and Russia at war, where after his Trilateralist/CFR/Bilderberg handlers re-organize everything.

Susan, non of the rest of us matter, not for an instatnt.

Joe  writes on Oct 25th, 2008 6:31pm

Nice to see the diversity of commentary here, everyone's represented: The Unabashed Liberal Cheerleader, the Disgusted Nihilist, the Trilateral Commission Conspiracy Theorist, even the Gynocentric Abstainerist.

"Our Votes don't matter." That's my favorite one. Don't get me wrong, I know there's more at work behind the scenes than your grade school civics textbooks would lead you to believe. But the old "I'm not voting because all the candidates stink" or "I'm not voting because there's a Fascist Column at work," come on-- Participation in democracy is more than voting, but that's where it starts. You don't like it, get off your ass and change it.

Ethan Beckley  writes on Oct 27th, 2008 10:50pm

No time to gamble? Shame on you. McCain and Obama are bigger gambles than anyone! A half-crazed ex-fighter pilot and a wet-behind-the-ears political baby? Ralph Nader gave US citizens so much (including the Freedom of Information Act that you newspapers like so much!) and is a sure bet!

I am disgusted every time I hear a Clinton supporter say in bitterness that they are going to vote for McCain or "sit this one out." Shame on you all. Get over yourselves - Hillary was a miserable candidate. If you are so bitter that you would rather not vote, or elect a CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN who stands for everything your candidate hates, then you are far, far worse than the republicans themselves. Stop being such a bunch of whiney poor sports and vote for the positions that YOUR CANDIDATE supports.

Rupert Kinnard  writes on Oct 28th, 2008 3:41pm

It is amazing to me how so many women who want to scream "sexism" on the part of the Obama camp against Hilary Clinton tend to wallow in racism themselves.

Susan said:

As a woman I can certainly understand the frustration Susan speaks of: I too was excited to witness Clinton's campaign, not because I don't love Obama (I'm a daily sipper of the KoolAid) but because my grandmother was born before women had the right to vote, and that means something to me. When I hear ANYONE say they will sit the election out, and in my life, I've heard it a lot, I'm saddened. Those who choose not to engage in the political process should remember women (and male supporters) DIED fighting for the right they don't even deign to use. Susan, please don't forsake the political process-we need every vote we can get! While I agree that Clinton experienced sexism, Obama is a courageous candidate, a kind human being, and by all that is just and good in this world, what we all desperately need if we are to embrace even the slightest hope of repairing the crushing damage Bush has created in the past 8 years.

Please vote. Remember, Clinton and Obama are identical on 99% of the issues. So go ahead, vote-do it for Clinton, do it for women everywhere, do it for yourself. If you support Roe v. Wade and ANY other liberal issue, vote for Obama.

PS. If you can't bring yourself to select a presidentical candidate, please vote on the other issues/candidates. This election is possibly the only time in our entire lives where Democrats have the possibility of gaining a majority in Congress...and that translates into who will be appointed to a lifetime on the Supreme Court...If that doesn't spur you to action, I don't know what could.

RE: ""Our Votes don't matter." That's my favorite one. Don't get me wrong, I know there's more at work behind the scenes than your grade school civics textbooks would lead you to believe."

Joe, some of us have been around long enough to teach your parents' Civics class. We've done our duty, played our roles, been model citizens while watching the global finance oligarchs screw everyone, everywhere with impunity and then torture the media into convincing little head bangers like yourself that it's your fault, you don't do enough to earn your democracy.

So let's do it now. Let's call up the specter of Robespierre. I for one would be thrilled to see him and his infamous Committee of Public Safety storm Wall Street and set up shop. Wonder if they'd draw the cheering throngs once seen at Place de la Concorde? Think they could make a game show out of it?

How's that for getting off our asses, Joe, Are you with us?
