[June 29th, 2005] SEPARATED AT THE PRINTING PRESS: WW's March 9 issue vs. the O's A&E cover June 24 issue: "Who knows?" asked A&E editors in a note about the cello-adorned "I [heart] Schubert" tattoo inked on the biceps of its cover model. "Maybe it will start a trend." Scoop doubts it: Fake-tattoo covers are so three months ago.

XMAS IN JULY: It's beginning to look a lot Christmas, or at least the holidays, around local illustrator Patrick Long 's house. That's because this graphically effervescent designer's expressive line drawings will be featured as part of a Starbucks national holiday advertising campaign. Launch date: right after Halloween.

ART MOVES: The plate tectonics of local art galleries continues to shift east. Pulliam Deffenbaugh Gallery (522 NW 12th Ave.) and PDX Contemporary Art (604 NW 12th Ave.) will move to a building at the corner of Northwest Flanders Street and 9th Avenue, next door to the new Elizabeth Leach Gallery (417 NW 9th Ave.). Architect Rick Potestio will design the Pulliam Deffenbaugh space, while the Portland-based, New York-commissioned hotshot Brad Cloepfil will outfit PDX's space.

MOVIN' ON UP: The Oregonian's architecture and urban-design critic, Randy Gragg , is leaving town-at least for a while. Gragg scored a Harvard Design School fellowship and will "study the intersection of media, civic participation and planning and urban design" as one of 10 Loeb fellows during the 2005-06 academic year.

HOME BOY: It may be the first time Fred Child, the honey-voiced host of NPR's Performance Today, has been in residence at a Northwest music festival-this week Child and crew are taping during the kickoff of Chamber Music Northwest's summer season (see preview, page 49)-but the guy used to be a familiar face around town. The 42-year-old bagpiper and Lincoln High grad (class of '81) remembers sneaking cans of Foster's into the balcony seats at Cinema 21, and tickling the ivories at Old Town cocktail lounges in the early 1980s. The multi-instrumentalist also brags about playing drums with the Corvallis-based Balafon Marimba Ensemble back in 1992, when the band opened for the Grateful Dead at the Oakland Coliseum.

NAME THIS: Scenesters Pepe and the Bottle Blondes are launching a new album in August, a spicy mix of Latin, classical, techno and flamenco songs, including a calypso tune about an alien who crash-lands on earth and asks Pepe for help.
