[August 31st, 2005] How many times, Dear Reader, have you thrown The Oregonian's Metro section aside in disgust and thought to yourself, "Rubbish! How can we live without more news from Washington and Clackamas counties and the greater East Metro region?"

Fret no more, for Portland's daily paper heard your pleas. Last week the paper started offering a whopping spread of dispatches Tuesday through Friday from TriMet zone 3 and beyond.

Check out the greatest hits from the first week:

DATELINE: Washington County.

"BEAVERTON GREETS NEW POSTMASTER."

Some postal pessimists think the Internet will make ye olde USPS obsolete. Not so, says new Beaverton postmaster Shawneen L. Betha, in this nine-paragraph exposé. "[S]ome things...can't be sent electronically," notes the defiant Betha. She adds: "In Beaverton, my goal will be to listen to the community's concerns about mail delivery." That's a relief.

DATELINE: Washington County.

"HOME FIRE SPRINKLERS ON DISPLAY IN SHERWOOD."

Everyone is safer after reading about a model home in Sherwood that displays all the benefits of installing fire sprinkler systems in new houses.... Hey-wake up!

DATELINE: Clackamas County.

"LAKE OSWEGO ARTERIAL TO SLOW AT PEAK HOURS NEAR SCHOOLS."

After a student got smacked by a car last school year, Portland's slickest suburb decided to impose a 20 mph speed limit near Lake O High School. "That's a great solution,'' opines the girl's father. Indeed.
