[April 5th, 2006] Further proof that 82nd Avenue is the new center of Portland's Asian world, Seattle fave Malay Satay Hut (2850 SE 82nd Ave., #104, 771-7888) opened a tiki-themed Malaysian outpost in the massive new Fubonn Shopping Center last week. The sweet staff is still working out a few weak spicing kinks, but the roti canai (simple-delish fried bread served with curry) is worth a car trip already. >> Speaking of the Oregon Culinary Institute (see listing above), the new kid on the block isn't so new after all. Executive Director Eric Stromquist and Executive Chef Brian Wilke were both high-ranking faculty at Western Culinary Institute for many years before striking out on their own. In fact, the entire core staff of the new school is ex-WCI insiders. Coincidence? Stromquist diplomatically asserts that there is no drama surrounding the mass exodus....
