[October 17th, 2007] When I really want some Denny’s without all the Denny’s—you know: name tags, forced smiles, fruit compote—The Overlook (1332 N Skidmore St., 288-0880) is my place. The small selection of cheap-enough beers on tap isn’t worth fretting about, because this NoPo staple, which is split into a traditional-looking diner and epically stylish ’60s-style lounge, feels like a place where one’s grandfather might have kicked it after the late-life divorce. Angular wood countertops, island booths with fireplaces in the center, round stained-glass windows—the place has a definite Ocean’s Eleven vibe, except Sammy Davis Jr. isn’t the only black guy in the room. But here’s the real kicker: The Overlook serves breakfast all day—amazing breakfast, such as cinnamon-roll French toast; chunky biscuits and gravy with eggs, ham and peppers; and a breakfast-specific Monte Cristo that adds egg to the mix. Throw in a half-dozen hi-def TVs glowing football-field green, and the Overlook is a place where I’d love to die of my inevitable massive heart attack someday.
