[March 12th, 2008] Offering no advance notice and only seconds to respond, we’ll ask City Hall candidates one question each week designed to test their mastery of the government they hope to lead.

The debut question asks the five candidates seeking to replace Commissioner Erik Sten what seems like a City Hall 101 kind of query: How many sworn officers are there in the Portland Police Bureau?

(Answer: 967 to 970 sworn officer jobs are currently filled, says bureau spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz, though 1,015 such positions were authorized last year.) —Corey Pein
