WINNERS
1 Portland’s “seriously pissed-off grannies, ” gray-haired, anti-war protesters, got the day off last week when nearly 1,000 whippersnappers, a.k.a. middle- and high-school students, left class to protest the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war. Ann Huntwork, one of the grannies, calls the youngsters’ protest “wonderful,” and jokes “it’s encouraging because we’re going to die off pretty soon.” Meanwhile, the grim U.S. toll passed the 4,000 mark.
2 Kids without health insurance got a booster shot in Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s State of the State address last week (see WWire for more). The guv says he’ll push the Legislature to raise cigarette taxes to insure every child in Oregon, after voters rejected a ballot measure to do the same last fall.
3 Portland State University’s basketball team may have lost in the NCAA Tournament, but at least the school has a “final three” in its search for a new university president. They are Kathie Olsen, a Bush administration science executive (isn’t that an oxymoron?); Wim Wiewel, a Baltimore academic whose name is pronounced “Vim VEE-vel” (no relation to Evil Knievel); and Jon Whitmore, a native Washingtonian currently trapped in Texas. Place your bets now!

LOSERS
1 The University of Oregon basketball team tanked last week in the first round of the NCAAs. Blame goes to coach [b]Ernie Kent for the Ducks’ lethargic laydown job, and fresh column fodder goes to The Oregonian’s John Canzano.
2 Hillary Clinton backers in Oregon had a deflating week. Rival Barack Obama swooped into the state (see page 8 for more), capturing headlines and speaking to sell-out crowds. The best the Clinton camp could do in response was to announce a new state campaign director. Whoopee!
3 Please, Mayor Tom Potter, no more chummy bets if you’re not going to raise the money. Portland’s mayor challenged Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard to see who could collect more money for needy military families. Then Pollard out-raised Potter 20 to 1, collecting $22,000 to Potter’s $1,100. Maybe Potter was channeling his 2004 campaign for mayor and limiting donations again.
