[March 26th, 2008]

This week’s question to some of the candidates for mayor (we’ll quiz the other six candidates in future weeks):

What is the largest public high school in the city of Portland?

SAM ADAMS, CITY COMMISSIONER:
“Oh wow. The largest public high school in the city of Portland. Wilson.”

SHO DOZONO, AZUMANO TRAVEL OWNER:
“David Douglas.”

CRAIG GIER, BROOKLYN HARDWARE EMPLOYEE:
“Would it be—Grant?”

JAMES B. LEE, RETIRED PHYSICIST:
“I got the one about the bus pass [see "Pop Quiz", WW, March 19], but that’s not mine. Gosh, it’s hard to say. I think it’s Lincoln.”

CHRISTOPHER RICH, “ENTREPRENEUR”:
“Isn’t it Lincoln?”

JEFF TAYLOR, MORTGAGE BROKER:
“Public high school. The city of Portland. Wilson.”

It is a pity that Commissioner Adams whose platform running for mayor suggests he is a strong proponent of education for the city doesn’t know what the largest high school is. His myopia of not thinking about this city’s outer east side extends to his whole decision making process. For example, he was eager to spend $40,000 for a few bike boxes in the central city, but totally ignores the lack of sidewalks and crosswalks in the David Douglas District.

This is very telling. Sam Adams is supposed to be a wonk and yet doesn't know that David Douglas is the largest high school in Portland? Good to see that Sho knows.

The question is a bit vague. Although David Douglas is geographically within the city limits of Portland, it is part of the Multnomah Education Service District(MESD), not Portland Public Schools (PPS). Adams can be a proponent of education all he wants (have you known a politician who wasn't?) but he better get realistic. At a recent fund-raiser he said that he wanted every eighth grader in the City of Portland to graduate high school. Certainly this is a laudable hope; however, it's statistically impossible to get a hundred percent of humans to do anything.

SHO KNOWS BECAUSE HE WILL SERVE THE "ENTIRE" PORTLAND COMMUNITY!

No surprises here. The only one of these guys who has any kind of record on education is Sho.

Actually, RSossel, I believe David Douglas HS is part of the David Douglas School District.

Let's be fair, Sho travels. Outside of his city block even. And all I can say about Adams..mmmm..... BOSTON LAGER

Gee how surprising that so many default to thinking the rich white people schools are the biggest.

I was undecided but this kind of tips me to the Sho side.

Results are not suprising
