[November 19th, 2008]

We asked Twilight fans to write 100-word stories with the characters from Stephenie Meyer’s popular girl-meets-vampire young-adult fantasy series to win VIP tickets to an early screening of the film, opening this Friday, based on the first book. Here’s our favorite, which we feel effortlessly melds Meyer’s inexpert prose with a particularly Portland sensibility, plus excerpts from four runners-up. Click on the image for a closer.

[MUSIC] OF MONTREAL
Like a pale, emaciated indie rock prince, Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes wants you to get your freak on. With a sound this catchy and weird, how can you resist? Roseland Theater, 8 NW 6th Ave., 224-2038. 8 pm. $15 advance, $17 day of show. All ages.

[DOGS/BEER] POOCH IN THE PUB

[MUSIC] LOVE IS ALL, VIVIAN GIRLS
Like the musical equivalent of taking Polaroids in 2008, lo-fi music is back by popular demand—led by the Jesus and Mary Chain meets Phil Spector pop of Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls. Backspace, 115 NW 5th Ave., 248-2900. 6 pm. $12. All ages.

[MUSIC] DEERHUNTER, TIMES NEW VIKING
On Microcastle, Deerhunter manages to combine the hypnotic, drony bliss of its previous work with frontman Bradford Cox’s love for vintage mid-’90s indie rock. Yeah, it’s even better than that sounds. Hawthorne Theatre, 3862 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 233-7100. 9 pm. $15. All ages.

MONDAY NOV. 24

[CLASSICAL] KALICHSTEIN-LAREDO-ROBINSON TRIO
After more than three decades together, the KLR Trio has reached the pinnacle of chamber-music performance. First United Methodist Church, 1838 SW Jefferson St., 224-9842. 7:30 pm Monday, Nov. 24. Kaul Auditorium, Reed College, 3203 SE Woodstock Blvd., 7:30 pm Tuesday, Nov. 25. $5-$37.
