9 Let’s Get Ruff

You load up on the latest threads and toys when you wanna enjoy the outdoors, why leave your best friend out of the fun? Bend-based Ruff Wear makes eco-friendly dog gear, from life jackets and packs to dog boots, for the mutt who likes to rough it. One of the company’s most useful products? The flexible, compact Go Between Dog Bowl ($14.95. Healthy Pets NW, 2224 NE Alberta St., 249-6571 or ruffwear.com) holds up to a quart of water for your thirsty hiking partner, and then folds up small enough to fit in a cargo pocket. Go fetch it in lichen green or red currant. (KC)

10 Scratch It

Sadly, having a cat means having cat toys. Ugh. Portland-born Square Cat Habitat rescues your giftee’s pad from tacky carpet posts with Itch, a sleek, modernist scratching square you can mount on a wall —right next to your vintage Eames lounge chair ($30-$50. Squarecathabitat.com). Crafted from bamboo plywood with a colorful mohair center (you choose the colors), it’s the ultimate way to make sure pussy keeps her claws seriously sharp…looking. (KC)

11 Paws Across America

Let’s get real: Comet’s gonna chew up that new octopus toy his human grandma gave him in three days. So when you’re buying canine treats this holiday season, make sure every chew counts. Planet Dog’s festive Orbee-Tuff Dog Toys ($10.95. Wag the Dog, 2410 SE 50th Ave., 238-0737), a collection of rubbery, candy cane-scented Xmas lights, snowballs and mints are made from recycled materials and feature hidey holes for nibbles. They’re not the toughest toys around, but who cares? Go ahead and buy another one. A portion of the proceeds go to service dog programs around the country. (KC)

12 Pass the Treats, Hold the Wheat

Got an allergic mutt? STAM grain-free dog treats, made from good stuff like chickpea flour, peanut butter, blueberries and homemade chicken stock ($6.95-$11.95. Salty’s Dog & Cat Shop, 3741 N Mississippi Ave., 249-1432, or stamtreats.com) are healthy and local. Marketing-overloaded pet fans will dig STAM’s (named after two dogs, Stella and Sam) no-nonsense packaging, which features little more than a Web address and sweet snapshots of local dogs. Plus, 10 percent of proceeds go to no-kill animal shelters. (KC)
