WW PickOpening Day at Beaverton Farmers Market

Here’s a great reason to head on out into the ‘burbs—and maybe give the folks at the downtown farmers markets a chance to catch their breath. It’s been 20 years since this twice-weekly market started, and with more than 100 vendors and shoppers numbering about 15,000 a day (the PSU farmers market nearly reached that count two weekends ago), this is the perfect time to check out this agricultural market if you haven't already. There will be plenty of new vendors (see Table Scraps for a taste), and freebie goodies for early-comers and kids. Beaverton Farmers Market, Hall Boulevard, between Third and Fifth streets., 643-5345. 8 am-1:30 pm Saturdays through Oct. 25, 3-6 pm Wednesdays through Aug. 27. Free. Map

MYOMDD, or Make Your Own Mother’s Day Dessert

We know that for some people, having the run of a pâtisserie like Pix and concocting inspiring culinary treasures is a dream that can only be fulfilled in the middle of some high-quality shut-eye. And then there’s reality, when the doors to the secret kingdom open and we’re allowed to exercise those longings while giving Mom a much-deserved treat. Adults and kids ages 5 and up will have the run of a dessert buffet, and they’ll get expert advice from the pros on assembling that perfect, polished pastry to take home. Only at Pix’s North Portland location. Pix Patisserie-North, 3901 N Williams Ave., 282-6539. 11 am-3 pm. $12. Map
