Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra

The number of tribute concerts for veteran modernist composer Elliott Carter threatens to surpass the number of years—100—he’s lived. Fortunately, his short, heated 1943 Elegy predates his obdurately offputting atonal works. It’s followed by a real 20th century masterpiece, Dmitri Shostakovich’s robust first cello concerto (with Portland native Ariana Falk returning from Boston as soloist), which also has some powerful horn and timpani moments. The concert concludes with that grandest of orchestral statements, Beethoven’s glorious Seventh Symphony. BRETT CAMPBELL.
