Neighborhood: Tigard

You’ve moved on up from Gresham... Welcome to Tigard! Tigard’s two formidable malls—the looming old school Washington Square and outdoor retail promenade Bridgeport Village—sum up the town nicely. (read more) It’s clean and safe and promises middle-class comfort with upscale shops and the best in franchise dining. But don’t think this ’burb’s cultural offerings begin and end at Regal Cinemas; Tigard is the only city on this list with bragging rights to its own musical-theater troupe, Broadway Rose. Suss it out at: Broadway Rose (9000 SW Durham Road, 620-5262) or with a stroll at Bridgeport Village on a sunny day (7455 SW Bridgeport Road, 968-1704).

Resist the ’burbs all you like, but when public transit or patrolling for parking spots becomes a bit too much, this upper-crust suburban retail utopia proves a surprisingly pleasant walk, with the requisite Apple Store, Borders, Anthropologie and Banana Republic serving as landmarks.
