Like a kid from the wrong side of the tracks who tries to make something of himself by pursuing a career in the arts, the gruff suburb of Gresham promotes its yearly jazz festival to smooth out its rough image. (read more) This literal end-of-the-line (if we’re talking the MAX’s blue) is a fringe of PDX that provides shelter to young and low-income families escaping Portland’s rising real-estate costs. The area plays host to all the trappings of a troubled ’hood, boasting gang activity, racial tension and a considerable rap sheet. But it has as its core a historic downtown stretch that demonstrates the area’s higher aspirations. Can gentrification be far behind? Suss it out at: The Mount Hood Jazz Festival (mthoodjazz.com), or atop the mechanical bull at Duke’s Hometown Bar and Grill (14601 SE Division St., 760-1400; not actually in Gresham, but well on the way).
