Here's a summer idea: Think of 10 Best of Portland ideas and send them to us. You might find that it's an enlightening experience or, in the case of Beauty for the Beast Pet Launderette, an outlet for your madness. Though some of these bests were suggested soon after last year's issue was published, it's around April that we really begin to focus on the subject. A funny thing starts to happen. Searching for bests can provide a fresh outlook, even for us jaded Portlanders. Having to think about what makes this city, neighborhood, block or barista "so Portland" is an exercise in appreciation that everyone could use. We think of this issue not as a contest to pick the best taco but as a way to reinforce those unusual qualities often difficult to pin down. So, while having a Best Place to Eat Jerky, a Best Kitchen Appliance Appreciation Group or a Best Animal in a Classroom isn't obviously useful, we're glad they're here. |
