Gentle Readers,
Some gusts from the windmills of Miss Dish's mind:

Enter the Dragonfish!

The new Paramount Hotel, just down the street from the Dish desk at Southwest 9th Avenue and Taylor Street, is up and functioning...save one thing that really makes a hotel: a restaurant. Blowfish Asian Cafe, owned by the Kikuchi family up in Seattle, is set to settle another franchise into the Portland hotel this summer, except it won't be called Blowfish, but Dragonfish. In fact, the Blowfish in Seattle is also changing its name. Why?

According to Blowfish central, this is the year of the dragon in the Chinese calendar. Does this mean the eatery is going to change its name each year? It's an intriguing, albeit risky, concept. Next year the restaux would be called Snakefish, and the year after, Horsefish. Good thing the year of the rat doesn't come along for quite a while.

Two Ways to Give and Get

On Feb. 20, Serratto hosts a gala fund-raiser to support the New Avenues for Youth organization. New Avenues provides homeless and runaway youth with social services. The event consists of a family-style dinner for $100 a head, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to New Avenues. Call Serratto at 221-1195 to get on board.

This year, the annual Chef's Night Out changes its name to Monkeyfish, er, I mean Taste of the Nation (that's it!), to share the moniker of a national series that includes more than a hundred like-minded benefits across the country. This gorge-athon donates 100 percent of ticket sales to agencies that help feed hungry people. Miss Dish went last year and a seemingly endless row of fabulous restaurants invited her over to say hi. This year, event organizers expect about 30 percent more participants because a new room at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts allows expanded festivities. Wear your stretch pants! Mark your calendar: The event is Monday, May 1, at 6 pm. Tickets are $60 and go on sale the first week of March.
