GENTLE READERS,
It is with great honor that Miss Dish serves to you, in
the regal style to which she's grown accustomed, a delicately
portioned plate of nouveau-style news nuggets from the world
of hospitality. PDXXXTRA!
FLASH: Everyone may be abuzz about Bruce Carey's
latest birth, Bluehour, but don't take your eyes
off his other baby. Yes, Saucebox, tried and true,
now has a new chef. Eric Johnson, formerly of Zefiro
and Bima, has taken the helm and redesigned the menu a tad.
Zefiro fans will be pleased to see that the seared ahi tuna
with avocado from the former palace of yum is now on the
Saucebox menu. And making its debut is a particularly nice
appetizer of mussels, steamed Thai-style in a light coconut
sauce with basil and chilies. Eric told Miss Dish that Mr.
Carey said they're the best mussels he's ever had. Since
Carey's been known to chase his share of mussels, consider
this an informed compliment.
FLASH: When you think of cutting-edge, the Georgian
Restaurant ensconced in the Meier & Frank store
downtown doesn't immediately come to mind. Miss Dish is
pleased that this classic has bucked the recent trend of
tearing down salad bars (people, sneeze guards are plenty
protective, thank you very much), and there's nothing quite
like eating pickled beets under a Corinthian column midday.
But after dark, things mutate. At 6 pm Thursday, Oct. 5,
join two of the city's best chefs for a Mediterranean seafood
cooking class. Amelia Hard, best known for her stint
running the kitchen at Genoa, and Paul Ornstein
of Southpark will teach at this benefit for the Oregon
chapter of Share Our Strength, a national hunger-relief
program. At only $20, this is a steal. Call 223-0512 ext.
5065 to sign up.
FLASH: It was bound to happen. Just as the cigar craze
bloomed and died, just as our kissing cousins in California
made it illegal to blow smoke in any rooms with four walls,
just as our state is receiving Big Tobacco settlements to
fill our coffers, comes the Fresh Air menu at Atwater's.
This prix fixe menu, according to the restaurant,
"celebrates smoke-free environments and the culinary contributions
of the dedicated local growers of healthy and sustainable
products." The menu is offered Oct. 10-Nov. 13 for $35 per
person.
FLASH: Honk if you love Greeks! The 49th Annual Greek
Festival, Oct. 6-8 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox
Church at 3131 NE Glisan St., 234-0468, is a must for fans
of Greek cuisine. Mild-mannered churchgoers by day, these
folks grill up a mean souvlaki by night--there's food aplenty
at this outdoor shindig, as well as folk dancing. Of special
note is a wide range of Greek pastries not usually available
unless your Grandma is from Athens.
