Local bartender Jen Lane has run into her share of rogues while serving drinks at the 1201 Cafe & Lounge. She usually cuts them off and tosses them out of the bar. Last week, at the Roseland Theater, Lane had the misfortune of running into a far more sober--and somber--Rogue: Portland's Camel cigarette cops, who turned the tables and tossed Lane out onto the street.

No, Lane hadn't been drinking too much. She was simply smoking the wrong cigarettes and breaking Camel's dress code.

Lane was one of many local nightclub employees who attended the annual Bartenders' Ball at the Roseland Nov. 2. The psychedelic party--featuring music by Pink Martini, go-go dancers, DJs, trippy Camel videos, free food, smokes and booze--is Camel's yearly "thank you" to all the local clubs, like the 1201, that promote and sell RJ Reynolds cigarettes exclusively.

At this year's Camel rave, Lane made the mistake of having a pack of (non-RJR) Virginia Slims on her table. Representatives from KBA, Camel's Chicago-based promotions company that hosted the Roseland bash, quickly reprimanded Lane and her friends and tossed her a pack of Camels.

Lane was left fuming. "Here we are, off-the-clock guests at a party supposedly thrown to thank us for our on-the-job promotion of Camel brands, and we are being chastised," she says. So the cigarette subversive took out her lipstick, handed it to a friend and had him write "Marlboro," underscored with a heart, on her chest above her tank top.

The Camel cops didn't find the joke funny. After being called an "ingrate," Lane, 29, says she was escorted out of the Roseland by two security guards at the behest of local KBA director Angela Miller. Lane says the security guards were rough, leaving bruises on her arms.

When contacted by WW, Miller would not confirm or deny the story, saying, "You know I'm not allowed to talk to you."
