WINNERS
1. After months of nasty legal wrangling, Sam
Naito has kept control of his family's empire. A Multnomah
County Court judge refused to order H. Naito Corp. broken
up, as other family members had demanded.
2. Jeanelle Bluhm has been smoking pot for
three years to control the spasms caused by multiple sclerosis.
Now, as the first person in the country to get a medical-marijuana
card, she's finally legal.
3. Third graders can breathe a sigh of relief: They
won't have to worry about being held back. Last week, legislative
leaders said that a bill to forbid "social promotion" of
third graders will not be promoted out of committee this
session.

LOSERS
1. Summer is still three weeks off, but Mt. Hood
National Forest officials already have their hands full
with old-growth squatters protesting the Eagle Creek timber
sale near Zigzag.
2. The whale
3. Multnomah County libraries director Ginnie
Cooper and Library Foundation chairman Paul Bradgon
looked like chumps when they sent out inaccurate fund-raising
letters understating the library's financial position. The
special library cards sent to donors bear the motto "Keeping
the Promise."
