WINNERS
1. Ex-Marine Joe Van Eeten won a legal victory
when a judge decided not to deport him to Holland. A Vietnam
veteran, Van Eeten won several medals for heroism but was
unable to prove his U.S. citizenship after being busted
for marijuana at his backwoods compound, Base Camp Bravo.
2. When migrant farmworker Gabrial Solis
was fired and evicted from Coleman Ranch 14 months ago,
he and his wife, Rosa, became symbols in the ongoing struggle
for farmworkers' rights. This week Solis was vindicated
when Coleman finally offered him $6,250 to drop his wrongful
discharge suit. He agreed.
3. Memory-challenged Portlanders got a break earlier
this week when the Public Utility Commission gave everyone
a six-month reprieve on the phase-in of 10-digit dialing.
The new 971 area code will not materialize until next spring
at the earliest.

LOSERS
1. The closure of Embers hits gender-benders
where it hurts. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission temporarily
suspended the popular gay club's liquor license Sept. 14
following fights between patrons on three nights in a row.
2. Some Central Precinct officers involved
in the overtime-pay scandal got a nasty surprise last week.
The officers thought their testimony before investigators
would make them prosecution-proof. Oops. Suddenly, the District
Attorney's Office is saying it may bring criminal charges
based on statements that were not compelled.
3. A study released by Oregon State University last
week found that the Oregon Department of Forestry's
management of state timber lands isn't doing jack to protect
endangered salmon runs. While the timber industry cries
foul, watch for Gov. John Kitzhaber to use this as ammunition
to tighten the rules.
