The Perfect
10: Picks for spring '99
1. Color is edging out black as we move into the next millennium.
Turquoise is particularly Y2K-compliant.
2. Flats overtake the season's sportswear-inspired looks
(see No. 6).
3. Anything bohemian. Careful--you know you've overdone
it if somebody asks directions to the country fair. Try
a peasant blouse with mannish cropped trousers.
4. White, from head to toe or in the form of the perfect
blouse, is a sure shot in a decade of dark.
5. Pants of interest include the still-hot capri and the
fresher wide-legged, cropped look.
6. Anything utilitarian, such as a hooded top or drawstring
pants. Perfect for the girl on the go. (Isn't that all of
us?)
7. Long, A-line skirts. Khaki is best. Odessa in the Pearl
District has a good one.
8. The flat-to-the-body "utility bag" is the sleek, modern
successor to the common purse. This is not your mother's
fanny pack; the look is refined and elegant.
9. Dresses in girlie prints are the easy antidote to the
"I've nothing to wear" panic.
10. Embellishment makes for a good fashion story. Look
for beading, blanket stitching and scalloped edges.
Self-Service
says:
Sex up your look with a deep part that's farther south.
Use the outer point of your brow as an indication of where
to part your hair...rid your Rolodex of people you wouldn't
miss even if some horrific tragedy befell them...realize
that khaki is the new neutral, edging charcoal out of the
No. 1 position...unload your umbrella and look at rain as
a way to reactivate your hair products...replace your weight
routine with yoga stretches.
