A transgender woman was shot and killed in downtown Portland on May 21.

The victim was Gigi Eugene-Pierce. Police identified her as a 28-year-old transgender woman from Boise, Idaho.

She was shot by another woman on the sidewalk on Southwest 2nd Avenue. She died before medical responders arrived.

The suspected gunman, Sophia G. Adler, 33, stayed at the scene, where police arrested her. She was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on a murder charge.

Police have not released any information about a potential motive or any details about whether the suspect and victim knew one another.

Update: After speaking with people who knew Eugene-Pierce, WW has updated this story to reflect her chosen name, Gigi Eugene-Pierce. Police originally identified Eugene-Pierce by her legal name, which is the name many people still knew her by, and records related to her death use that name.
