Neighborhood: Alberta

Once one of Portland’s poorer areas, time and gentri—er, did we promise never to use that again?—have changed Alberta Street into one of the city’s main attractions. (read more) Beyond a bevy of excellent restaurants and boutiques, Alberta offers some of PDX’s best locations for people-watching—none better than Random Order Coffeehouse & Bakery (1800 NE Alberta St., 340-6995, randomordercoffee.com); grab a cup of joe and a slice of rhubarb pie and geek out for a few hours playing “spot the local pseudo-celebrity.” Stock up on dinner ingredients at Alberta Cooperative Grocery (1500 NE Alberta St., 287-4333, albertagrocery.coop), a corner joint that sells fresh, locally grown produce. The co-op also hosts near-monthly Open Forum Potlucks, in which neighbors and friends come to socialize and improve the community. Just off the main drag, Alberta Park (Northeast 22nd Avenue and Killingsworth Street) is a nice place for a leisurely stroll or a Sunday softball game. Alberta has always been a bit funky, and nothing brings out the freaks like Last Thursday, a local tradition since 1997. Booths crowd the street and the ’hood’s art galleries and stores open the last Thursday of each month for what amounts to one giant block party. —Michael Mannheimer
