BagelGate: Kettleman's Bagels "Will Not Change"

bagel

The entire city of Portland was rendered shocked and dismayed yesterday with news that local chain Kettleman Bagels—known for its delicious, chewy boiled New York style bagels—has been acquired by Noah's Bagels—known for its bagel-shaped pieces of dough.

Most distressing was a line from the press release from the Einstein Noah Restaurant Group (which also owns Einstein Bagels and Manhattan Bagels) that "The Company expects to rebrand all five locations into one of its other brands in the future."

But at the Northwest location off 23rd Ave., staff assured a despondent WW that corporate has told them "nothing is changing."

"We aren't changing the bagels, we have the best bagels in Portland," Assistant Manager Danyelle Travis told WW. "We won't be freezing and unfreezing bagels."

Travis did acknowledge that after a transitional period of "maybe three or four months," the stores might have different branding.

Both Einstein Noah and Kettleman have been unavailable for comment.

Did Assistant Manager Danyelle Travis say that the 23rd store would finally start putting tomatoes on bagels when customers order and pay for them, instead of forgetting them EVERY SINGLE TIME?

This is such an obvious lie. No company with an established brand would allow its products to differ in quality from location to location. Maybe they will have a "Kettleman's" sub brand or something. Otherwise they will just change the bagels down the road and tell everyone to deal with it (in a nicely worded press release). The parent company definitely won't bother telling an Asisstant Manager what their plan is.

This is a great opportunity for a new bagel company to fill the soon to be created void...

Noah's makes frozen pieces of sh.. I agree with the previous commenter on not allowing variance in products under common branding.

Best bagels in Portland? What about Tastebud's Montreal-style bagels?

SHould have thought of doing an employee buyout / coop structure Mr and Mrs Kettleman and keeping it local rather than selling out to the plain vanilla and poor tasting Einsteins!!

Well, I just went to the training day at the 23rd location and let me tell you, it was entirely Einstein's. There goes my closest place to find Stumptown coffee.
