[TAPE MUSIC] It's one of the more curious sights we've seen on magazine shelves in a long time: The Believer's annual music issue includes a cassette compilation taped to the front. The magazine, owned and operated by McSweeney's (an unmatched launching pad for literary talent the past 14 years), enlisted the help of legendary K Records founder Calvin Johnson to curate a compilation normally included on compact disc—a digital download of the comp also comes with your purchase of the excellent issue—and his mix includes a lot of Northwest bands playing tonight's show. Highlights include Olympia all-grrrl shoegaze outfit Broken Water, Portland's Memories (featuring members of White Fang) and a rare big-room performance from Johnson himself, whose earth-shakingly deep voice delivers inspiring songs of love and liberation. All of this will be delivered on a brand-spankin'-new Crystal Ballroom sound system—because high fidelity is what cassette mixtapes are all about.
