Pavement/Stephen Malkmus Tribute and Michael Heald Book Release: Point Juncture, WA; Velella Velella; the World Radiant; Fruit Bats; Muscle and Marrow; Your Rival; Awkward Energy; Purrbot; Time Waster; Adieu Caribou

[ON THE STEREO] I was a little surprised to learn some of the bands here weren’t already Pavement cover bands—I’m looking at you, Your Rival, and Point Juncture, WA—but it’ll be interesting to see if and how Velella Velella and Purrbot stretch their chops to fill Stephen Malkmus’ shoes. The whole motivation for this event is a little confusing. Local publisher Michael Heald wrote a book of essays, titled Goodbye to the Nervous Apprehension, where he compares himself to Malkmus (among others) after moving to Portland and encountering the Pavement singer around town. He then rounded up local bands to fuse a reading with a geek-out tribute night. But, hey, I need no excuse to listen to Pavement.
