[TOWN HOP] Seattle’s hip-hop scene has grown immensely during the past decade, and a large portion of that growth can be attributed to the output of veteran duo Blue Scholars. Although the group never quite made it to the big stage, rapper Geo and producer Sabzi’s consistency in putting out lush, socially conscious music opened the floodgate for a whole new generation of quality Seatown emcees. The two other groups on the bill, Brothers from Another, a wildly impressive duo of Seattle youngsters that make melodic party music, and the Physics, a band that has built a niche of making nostalgic tunes for Northwest summers, are close relatives of the Scholars’ sound. The Scholars’ latest album, Cinemetropolis—a concept album surrounding cinema and media and the role they play in our lives—proves the group is still exploring new directions, and is still one of the premier acts in the region.
