The Sword, Gypsyhawk, American Sharks

MATTHEW SINGER
8:30 pm, Friday December 07 | $16 advance, $20 day of show
Hawthorne Theatre
1507 SE Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.

[VINTAGE METAL] Of all the retro metal acts who worship at the altar of Black Sabbath, Austin's the Sword is so damn shameless it wouldn't be at all surprising to learn the band started after its guitarists bought the rights to a bunch of unused Tony Iommi riffs on eBay. Let it be clarified, this is not at all a criticism. Across the six fantastical albums the band has released since forming in 2003, the group has proven to be expert mimics, which is really as admirable a quality as originality. Apocryphon, the Sword's latest, bashes out cosmically heavy, occasionally psyched-out rock ’n’ roll that, by proxy, actually makes you appreciate the Sabbath catalog more because of what it spawned.
