Terence LaNoue

RICHARD SPEER
Tuesday November 20
Butters
520 NW Davis St., 2nd floor

Internationally renowned artist Terence LaNoue excels in intricately pieced-together, unstretched canvases. Hanging from wooden planks, they incorporate a dizzying myriad of pictorial and abstract motifs. Sunken Ships: Coast of Troy is dominated by a scaffoldinglike undergirding that recalls the rubble of the fallen World Trade Center towers, while Shells Off Costa Rica: Playa Hermosa evokes the sensual curves of tropical fruit. In the unstretched canvases and smaller pieces on wood, LaNoue exploits the neurotic complexity that makes his oeuvre so continually engaging. Still, for all the hyperkineticism, there is no one standout showstopper in this show that even halfway equals Ancient and Lost Rivers: Sheba, which reigned like the Queen of Sheba over the artist’s exhibition at Butters two years ago. Through Nov. 24.
