[SYNTH POP] Although much of today’s pop music feels formulaic and repetitive, I do admit there’s an art to the kind of infectious melodies lingering unbeknown to the listener: If a band writes an unavoidably addictive song, people will take notice. For Walk the Moon, this song is “Anna Sun,” which the Ohio group originally recorded and self-released in 2010, eventually resulting in a record deal with RCA. The track boasts exclamatory synth riffs and a catchy chorus; you’d be hard-pressed to not nod your along with it. Walk the Moon’s 2012 self-titled album (and its first with label support) uses a similar mixture of bright sound, youthful bravado and attention-grabbing hooks, but you have to wonder how long a band can sustain itself on such a common recipe.
