Horse Feathers, Frank Fairfield, Ezza Rose Band

[CHARMING FOLK] Horse Feathers isn’t a group that surprises often, yet its sound remains distinctive. Although this is partially attributed to frontman Justin Ringle’s velvety voice, the music also lends itself to carefully crafted string work. While these elements have been constants in all four of the band’s full-length albums, what Ringle and his rotating cast of backing members continue to improve upon is the art of selective refrain. In Cynic’s New Year, the latest Horse Feathers release, the compositional pieces guide a fervid listener effortlessly through the tracks with subtle and often sparse instrumentation. The songs wonderfully balance everything the album has to offer—banjo, keys, acoustic guitar, horns, strings and woodwinds—with a subdued quietness that make it worth more than a few spins.
