[OVULATION FUNK] A weird and wonderful combination of Prince, Parliament, in-their-prime Digital Underground and the Family Stone, it’s a good bet there have been enough babies conceived as a direct result of Excellent Gentlemen sets than any other local act. The Portland funk and soul quintet—rocking Ted’s as part of a monthlong Booty Jam residency—specializes in a highly danceable sound that shifts from groovy hip-hop to heavy-petting R&B. On its record, Just Say Yes, as well as during its live shows, the group lays the groundwork for a population boom nine months down the road.
