[BASS GUITAR OF DEATH] Labeling Joe Preston's long-running, bass-intensive solo project "doom metal" isn't entirely accurate. It's better to just drop the "metal" and merely call it "doom" because that's what his rumbling instrumental compositions sound like: soul-rattling, bowel-disturbing, all-encompassing doom. Preston, an experimentalist journeyman who's done stints in Earth, High on Fire and Sunn O))), started recording as Thrones in the mid-'90s, using his instrument (sometimes of the double-necked variety) and a bank of pedals to create amorphous soundscapes that often resemble transmissions from the most frightening corners of deep space. It's headphone music for people who enjoy having night terrors.
