Theresa Redinger: Aberrations and Obstructions to Vision

Theresa Redinger turns the viewer into a voyeur in Aberrations & Obstructions to Vision. She hangs plastic screens in front of rectangular paintings; the screens are frosted, with patterns resembling shutters or blinds. These and other motifs complete the illusion that you, the viewer, are looking out a window. A cat seems to recline on a windowsill. A palm tree looms outside, and you wonder where you are: Southern California, Hawaii, Bali? The paintings themselves are drab and technically unremarkable, and the plastic screens are distractingly cheap-looking. But the conceit of the exhibition—illusionism and the act of looking—is worthwhile. Mercifully, whimsical touches such as the slumbering cat suggest that Redinger isn’t taking herself too seriously. Through Dec. 29.
