[POW WOW NOW] As globalization draws together the corners of the earth, folding the sounds of formerly far-off lands (e.g., Latin American cumbia, West African pop) into Western music, DJ crew A Tribe Called Red is repping a musical tradition from the land right beneath our feet: that of North America’s indigenous peoples. The three Ottawa-based producers, who all hail from Canadian “First Nations,” mash up the drumming and whooping sounds of a traditional pow-wow with the drumming and whooping sounds of a modern club—that is, hip-hop-heavy EDM—to create a strikingly original (and subtly meaningful) hybrid style they call “pow wow step.” The Tribe plays Holocene as part of the eclectic Soul’d Out Festival with fellow ethno-electronic record-spinners Anjali and the Incredible Kid.
