Booker T., Charlie Hunter, Carlton Jackson

JEFF ROSENBERG
7 pm., Sunday April 14 | $22.

[SOUL-FUNK-JAZZ COLLAB] Booker T. Jones has re-emerged in recent years with a pair of Grammy-winning releases: Potato Hole in 2009, produced by Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers, and 2011’s Roots-backed The Road from Memphis. The latter was laser-aimed at the contemporary market with guest spots from Jim James, Sharon Jones and the National’s Matt Berninger, plus instrumental covers of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and Lauryn Hill’s “Everything is Everything” (and a Lou Reed turn). This show with guitarist Charlie Hunter, another celebrated instrumentalist a generation younger than Jones, should hopefully push the classic soul-funk man to the edges of his meat-and-potatoes sound. Impeccably pedigreed Portland-via-Nawlins favorite Carlton Jackson completes the trio on drums.
