[FAIRYTALE INDIETRONICA] Canuck dream poppers Megan James and Corin Roddick are something of a high-wire act, a curious mix of the fleshy and spectral that’s earned the duo considerable buzz since last year’s full-length debut, Shrines. James’ impressionistic, anatomy-centric lyrics (take a drink for every time she mentions a body part) inhabit the chillingly lovely synth landscape of Roddick’s bleep-boop loops, canned claps and hip-hop beats. Hovering somewhere in between is James’ Tinkerbell-ish voice, a virginal lilt made earthbound by Roddick’s tweaky processing and bass-heavy production. The crisp melodies of “Belispeak,” “Fineshrine” and breakout single “Ungirthed” get submerged in echo-y effect for a sound as lofty as it is creepy, and the act’s live show ups the atmospheric ante with a synced light display of cocoon-lanterns. If Peter Pan met the Grimm Brothers, it may sound—and look—something like this.
