Rose Cousins, Cara Luft

BRIAN PALMER
8 pm., Thursday April 11 | $12 advance, $15 day of show.
Alberta Rose Theatre
3000 NE Alberta St.

[FOLK BALLADS] Canadian singer-songwriter Rose Cousins makes some pretty stirring stuff. She uses her broad vocal range to hit rich highs and dusty lows while singing about some of life’s bigger issues. And while the music is not overtly happy, it possesses a haunting beauty that is augmented by dreamy strains of Americana and plaintive piano keys. Cousins performs with an understated confidence and often sounds more like a matter-of-fact storyteller than someone trying to tug at your heartstrings, but sometimes that is exactly what her music ends up doing. If you like contemplative folk and Americana with a bit of Sarah McLachlan-like vocals tossed in, Cousins is just what you’re looking for.
