Kiran Ahluwalia, DJ Anjali

MITCH LILLIE
8 pm., Wednesday April 24 | $18 advance, $20 day of show. Under 21 permitted with legal guardian.
Alberta Rose Theatre
3000 NE Alberta St.

[WORLD FUSION] Where in the world is Kiran Ahluwalia? She’s currently in New York, the great implosion of global confluence, and that probably suits her. Revamping the classic Punjabi poems of her heritage into modern world-fusion compilations is her game. You, as a listener, play the game by raising one eyebrow anytime a strange influence appears. Is that Irish fiddle? Plain old chord progressions on acoustic guitar, backed by a cello? Check and check. If the clapping and guitar noodling that introduce her latest album, Aam Zameen: Common Ground, sound a lot like the Saharan vibes of Grammy-winning Tinariwen, that’s because it is Tinariwen, in full whooping support of Ahluwalia on a few tracks. Her music is at its best when it swells within softer, traditional Punjabi styles, no matter what other instruments—accordion, harp or the traditional tumbi—accompany her.
