Medeski, Martin and Wood; 1939 Ensemble

BRETT CAMPBELL
8 pm., Thursday April 18 | $21.40-$31.50.
Roseland Theater
8 NW 6th Ave.

[JAMMY JAZZ] You never know what stops the celebrated keyboard-bass-drum trio Medeski, Martin and Wood will revisit from its 22-year, 18-album meander along the borders of jazz. But since this is a rare all-acoustic tour—with John Medeski on acoustic piano instead of B3 and Chris Wood on upright bass—and they just released Free Magic, which documents their previous all-acoustic tour from 2007, we might encounter some of that album’s eclectic influences (Chopin to Sly Stone, Sun Ra to Mingus), instrumentation (balafon, toy piano, melodica, shruti box, tuned metal percussion) and more expansive improvisations. Expect the more transparent, intimate sound and somewhat more conventional jazz feel of the band’s earlier acoustic efforts, punctuated by occasional free-ish excursions, but an eventual return to the trio’s solid, signature rock-funk groove.
