Goodfoot All-Stars 6 Annual Tribute to James Brown

[SUPERBAD] James Brown, God rest his PCP-addled spirit, spent a lifetime pioneering funk and honing one of the most unique voices in American music history. How, then, does a tribute act assembling a hodgepodge of session players even try to replicate that? Well, in the case of the Goodfoot All-Stars’ annual celebration of the Godfather of Soul, the answer’s simple: You don’t. Wisely subbing Brown’s vocal yowls with screeching horns and reducing the majority of the singing to grunts, the All-Stars’ show spans the man’s career without resorting to imitation. By letting the grooves speak for themselves, the band avoids caricature, emerging not with a night of pageantry but an undeniably funky good time.
