Photography group show

RICHARD SPEER
Thursday April 11
Blackfish Gallery
420 NW 9th Ave.

The back-gallery photography show at Blackfish is head and shoulders more interesting than the front gallery’s mixed-media paintings. Among the photo exhibition’s highlights are Tori Bryer’s moody suite of Antarctic glaciers and icebergs and Michael Knutson’s abstract Fiesta series, with its overlapping ovals in green, orange and blue. Less compelling are Rita Alves’ 3-D landscapes. When you put on the 3-D glasses, the prints don’t really even look 3-D—they just look fuzzy, and you take the glasses off quick, sensing a headache coming on. Finally, Paul Missal’s Diana of the Evening diptych certainly features a fetching nude model, but the inclusion of hand-painted flowers flanking the figure is hackneyed and chauvinist. Closes April 30.
